While 17th-century painters often portrayed serene scenes of domestic music-making, the repertoire featured on this album reflects a far more virtuosic and demanding tradition. The works place exceptional technical and expressive challenges on the performer and were composed by two of the greatest viola da gamba masters in history. In this recording, Johanna Rose deepens her exploration of the instrument’s rich legacy through music by Marin Marais and Antoine Forqueray. As Hubert Le Blanc famously remarked, “Marais played like an angel, Forqueray like the devil,” a contrast that captures the refined elegance of Marais and the formidable, highly demanding brilliance of Forqueray’s writing.

Johanna Rose is an internationally acclaimed viola da gamba soloist recognized for her virtuosity, expressive depth, and stylistic range. She has performed at leading venues including the Konzerthaus Vienna, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, and Zaryadye Hall in Moscow, with broadcasts across major European networks. Educated in Basel, Milan, and Seville, she combines scholarly insight with artistic freedom, moving seamlessly between early and contemporary repertoire. Her recordings, notably Histoires d’un Ange (2019), have received widespread critical praise and multiple award nominations. Rose collaborates with prominent ensembles and performs on a historic 1721 Egidius Kloz viola da gamba, continuing to bridge tradition and innovation.
