Christopher Tye (c. 1505–1572/73) was an English composer, poet, and organist whose work helped shape the evolution of English cathedral music alongside Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, and Orlando Gibbons. Educated at Cambridge and Oxford, he served as choirmaster and organist at Ely Cathedral and may have taught music at the royal court. Tye’s output spans Latin masses, English anthems, Magnificat, Te Deum, motets, psalm settings, and instrumental works, many incorporating emerging Continental styles such as lively rhythms and duple time. His English works were influential in establishing Reformation liturgical music. Surviving works, including the incomplete Peterhouse Mass, are revived through scholarly reconstruction and historically informed performance.
Cinquecento is a distinguished European vocal ensemble, formed in Vienna in 2004, comprising five professional singers from Austria, Belgium, England, Germany, and Switzerland. Named after the Italian term for the sixteenth century, the group draws inspiration from the pan-European imperial chapel choirs of that era. Cinquecento specializes in lesser-known sixteenth-century choral repertoire, particularly from the Habsburg courts, while also performing a broad range of Renaissance polyphony and selected contemporary works. The ensemble maintains an extensive international touring schedule, has earned numerous recording accolades—including a 2021 Diapason d’Or de l’Année—and serves as Ensemble in Residence at St Rochus and Sebastian in Vienna, performing weekly polyphonic Mass settings and recording for Hyperion.
