Rémy Ballot presents a significant recording of Eugène Ysaÿe’s Six Sonatas for Solo Violin, Op. 27, a milestone of 20th-century violin literature. Originally written for six virtuosos of the 1920s, the works fuse influences from Bach and Paganini with Romantic and French traditions from Franck to Debussy, forming a visionary synthesis of violin writing. The album’s second disc features the Sonata for Two Violins performed with Iris Ballot, highlighting an underappreciated 1915 work that unites diverse stylistic currents of its time. The recording emphasizes interpretative clarity, historical awareness, and the expressive breadth of Ysaÿe’s compositional vision and interpretative refinement.
Rémy Ballot (born 1977 in Paris) is a French violinist and conductor noted for his dual career in performance and orchestral leadership. He studied violin at the Paris Conservatoire with Gérard Poulet and received artistic guidance from Ivry Gitlis, while also serving as the last pupil of Sergiu Celibidache. Ballot founded his own orchestra in Paris and later established himself internationally, particularly through acclaimed live recordings of Anton Bruckner’s symphonies. As founder of Klangkollektiv Wien and conductor-in-residence for the Richard Strauss Days, he has developed a strong profile in Austro-German repertoire. He also maintains an active career as a violinist in chamber music and orchestral collaborations.
