The Aeolian Quartet was a distinguished London-based string ensemble with a strong international touring, recording, and broadcasting presence. Formed in 1944 as the successor to the pre-World War II Stratton Quartet, it remained active until its disbandment in 1981. The original Stratton Quartet had been prominent in the 1920s and 1930s but evolved due to George Stratton’s increasing commitments with the London Symphony Orchestra. Key members of the new ensemble included Watson Forbes, John Moore, and Max Salpeter. The Aeolian Quartet gained early recognition through performances at major events, including international music festivals in Prague and London in 1946.
