Quintus Horatius Flaccus, commonly known as Horace, was a leading lyric poet of ancient Rome during the reign of Augustus. His carmina continued to resonate far beyond antiquity, being sung in monasteries between the tenth and twelfth centuries, where classical poetry was preserved within medieval musical culture. In this recording, Stefano Albarello reconstructs fourteen of these odes from ancient neumatic notation, alongside a melody from Eunuchus. The project, titled Vocem cum cithara dedit, evokes a historical soundscape in which Latin verse, rhythm, and melody converge, offering a modern reconstruction of the continuity between antiquity and the Middle Ages.

Stefano Albarello is an Italian specialist in ancient and medieval music, active since 1985 in both scholarly research and performance practice on medieval vocal traditions and plucked instruments. His work also extends to Arabic and Ottoman music, with particular expertise in the kanun and oud. He has performed internationally as a soloist and conductor in oratorios and baroque opera repertoire and has held academic posts, including as the first Italian professor of medieval music at the Conservatory of Vicenza, as well as teaching positions in Lucca focused on medieval sacred chant and ensemble practice. Albarello is founder and scientific director of the Laboratory of Medieval Musical Theatre and directs the Cantilena Antiqua Ensemble, dedicated to research and reconstruction of medieval repertoire. He has also published studies on medieval and Renaissance music and contributed to theatre and film productions.
