Makoto Ueno (b. 1966, Muroran, Japan) is a Japanese pianist raised in a musical family of organists. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and the Mozarteum Salzburg under distinguished mentors, drawing additional influence from leading musicians and theorists. An award-winning performer, he has appeared internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. Ueno is noted for his versatility on both modern and historical pianos, particularly instruments from the 19th century. He has an extensive discography across major labels, often earning critical acclaim. Since 1996, he has served as a professor at Kyoto University of Arts, alongside an active role in teaching, adjudicating competitions, and giving masterclasses worldwide.
