Evgeny Svetlanov (1928–2002) was a leading figure in Soviet and Russian music, born into a theatrical family at the Bolshoi Theatre. Trained at the Gnessin Institute and the Moscow Conservatory under influential teachers such as Heinrich Neuhaus, he began conducting in 1953 and rose rapidly at the Bolshoi. Despite political setbacks, he became chief conductor of the USSR State Symphony Orchestra, leading it for 35 years and shaping a distinct Russian orchestral sound. Internationally active, he also held posts in Europe and Japan. Renowned for his passionate, Romantic style, he was both a conductor and composer, leaving a lasting legacy in Russian orchestral performance and recording.
