Brouhaha: Shaped by Fire is an interdisciplinary performance and recording initiative that blends music with anthropology to explore humanity’s relationship with nature and its origins. Founded by violinist Maiani da Silva, the project commissions six composers to create solo violin works reflecting on aspects of human behaviour, environment, and ecological interconnection. Developed in collaboration with scientists, it draws a historical arc from prehistoric communal gatherings around fire to contemporary digital communication. The resulting works transcend stylistic boundaries, combining artistic and intellectual inquiry to examine humanity’s dual capacity to shape and be shaped by the natural world.

Maiani da Silva is an internationally active soloist, chamber musician, and educator whose career spans performances across multiple continents and collaborations in both classical and contemporary music. Trained at the Boston Conservatory and New York under distinguished mentors, she is praised for her sensitive, dreamlike interpretations and distinctive artistic voice. She is a member of the GRAMMY-winning ensemble Eighth Blackbird and has premiered works by major contemporary composers, contributing to significant new repertoire. Da Silva is also the founder of Brouhaha: Shaped by Fire, an interdisciplinary project exploring human ecology through music and science. Alongside her performing career, she teaches at Yale University and continues to shape contemporary musical discourse through performance, recording, and education.
