This program presents a curated exploration of the keyboard’s vocal qualities across diverse styles, composers, and historical periods. It begins with the rhetorical, declamatory style exemplified by Girolamo Frescobaldi, highlighting the instrument’s expressive, speech-like character. The journey continues through the art of diminution, where ornamentation both conveys meaning and clarifies polyphonic textures. The chorale tradition, associated with Martin Luther, merges lyrical beauty with spiritual depth. Concluding with works of varying virtuosity, the program demonstrates how keyboard technique, whether brilliant or subtle, can evoke the illusion of multiple voices, revealing the instrument’s remarkable capacity to emulate the human voice.
Yoann Moulin is a French early music keyboard specialist trained at the Caen choir school, where he first studied harpsichord under mentors such as Bibiane Lapointe and Thierry Maeder. He continued his advanced studies at the Paris Conservatory with teachers including Olivier Baumont, Kenneth Weiss, and Blandine Rannou, while also learning from figures such as Pierre Hantaï and Skip Sempé. He performs internationally at major festivals and venues across Europe and beyond, collaborating with leading early music and interdisciplinary ensembles. His recordings, particularly of Girolamo Frescobaldi and German Baroque composers, have received critical acclaim. Moulin is also the founder of an early keyboard ensemble dedicated to Renaissance performance and improvisation practices.
