Nicholas Phan’s album Lamenting Earth, recorded with the Jasper String Quartet and pianist Myra Huang, is a thematic exploration of humanity’s relationship with nature across the 19th to 21st centuries. The program includes works by Franz Schubert, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Charles Ives, alongside contemporary pieces by Patrick Castillo and Vivian Fung. Nicholas Phan is an acclaimed lyric tenor known for his versatility across opera, orchestral repertoire, and vocal chamber music. Born 1979 in Hartford and raised in Ann Arbor, he trained at the University of Michigan and participated in programs including the Houston Grand Opera Studio. A Grammy Award winner and multiple nominee, he has performed with leading orchestras such as the San Francisco Symphony and collaborated with conductors including Esa-Pekka Salonen. Renowned for his recital work, he frequently partners with pianist Myra Huang and ensembles like the Jasper String Quartet, championing both classical repertoire and newly commissioned vocal works.
