Undreamed Shores brings together three contemporary string quartets performed by the Jupiter String Quartet, reflecting works the ensemble has developed over years of performance. Michi Wiancko’s To Unpathed Waters, Undreamed Shores presents seven evocative movements inspired by nature, addressing fragility and ecological awareness. Stephen Andrew Taylor’s Chaconne/Labyrinth, written during the pandemic, explores tension and transformation through a recurring harmonic cycle. Completing the album, Kati Agócs’s Imprimatur (String Quartet No. 2) offers a continuous, rhapsodic meditation. Together, the works form a reflective and hopeful exploration of contemporary quartet writing.
The Jupiter String Quartet, founded in 2001, is a distinguished American ensemble comprising violinists Mélanie Clapiès and Meg Freivogel, violist Liz Freivogel, and cellist Daniel McDonough. Renowned for their eloquent intensity, they perform internationally at major venues and festivals, including Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, Aspen, and Banff. The quartet has received numerous awards, including the Banff and Fischoff competitions, the Cleveland Quartet Award, and an Avery Fisher Career Grant. Equally dedicated to traditional repertoire and contemporary commissions, they collaborate with leading composers while maintaining an active educational presence through residencies, masterclasses, and community outreach, cultivating new audiences for chamber music.
