Reinhard Goebel, a living legend of early music, continues to advance 18th-century repertoire through renewed interpretations, notably revisiting Franz Gleißner’s orchestral arrangement of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Gran Partita K. 361. In 2025, he performed and recorded the work with the Munich Radio Orchestra during a Bavarian tour. Originally composed for winds, the piece was later adapted into a Sinfonia concertante, reflecting Goebel’s advocacy for arrangements. He highlights their artistic value while referencing Christian Cannabich (1731–1798)’s influence on the Mannheim orchestra, whose discipline and style profoundly shaped Mozart’s compositional and performance approach.
Reinhard Goebel (born 1952) is a German conductor and violinist renowned for his work in early music and historically informed performance. He founded Musica Antiqua Köln in 1973 and led it until 2007, establishing it as a leading ensemble in the field. Goebel studied violin with prominent teachers across Europe and developed expertise in both modern and baroque styles. He has played a significant role in reviving neglected repertoire, including works by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Johann David Heinichen, and Jan Dismas Zelenka. Since 2018, he has directed the Berlin Baroque Soloists and has also served as a professor in Salzburg.
