Fountain of Youth, the second album by the Mithras Trio for Linn Records, explores early works by Dmitri Shostakovich, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, and cellist-composer Joy Lisney, continuing the ensemble’s acclaimed “intriguing and eclectic” programming. The album focuses on piano trios written at the beginning of composers’ careers, highlighting both emerging voices and early stylistic development. It includes the world premiere recording of Lisney’s Petrichor, commissioned by the trio and premiered at Wigmore Hall in 2023. Shostakovich’s First Piano Trio reveals early traces of his mature musical language, while Korngold’s Op. 1 trio already demonstrates remarkable stylistic confidence shaped by late-Romantic influences. Together, the program offers a vivid portrait of youthful creativity and compositional emergence.
The Mithras Trio is a leading young piano trio known for its “exhilarating, highly-toned” performances and rapidly rising international profile. Formed in 2017 at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the ensemble gained early recognition after winning first prize at the 2019 Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition, alongside additional major awards including the Royal Over-Seas League Music Competition and the Cavatina Intercollegiate Chamber Music Competition. Selected as BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists for 2021–2023, they have performed widely across Europe and North America at venues such as Wigmore Hall. Dedicated advocates of contemporary music, they have collaborated with composers including Helen Grime and Julian Philips, and have premiered works by composers such as Péter Tornyai and Joy Lisney. Their discography for Linn Records includes the debut album Eros (2023).
