Claudio Maccari and Paolo Pugliese, widely recognized as leading specialists in Romantic guitar repertoire, present Ferdinando Carulli – Works for Guitar Duo as a vibrant homage to one of the foundational figures of the classical guitar. The project combines daring transcriptions with original works to highlight the inventive and lyrical character of Ferdinando Carulli’s music. Performed on period instruments, the album emphasizes virtuosity, expressiveness, and a striking modern sensibility, while reaffirming Carulli’s enduring influence on the evolution of guitar writing.
Ferdinando Carulli (1770–1841) was an Italian guitarist and composer born in Naples who later settled in Paris, where he became a central figure in early 19th-century guitar culture. Unusually, he began studying the guitar only at age twenty, after initially training as a cellist. He gained particular renown as a teacher, producing influential pedagogical works, most notably his Méthode Complète, Op. 27 (1810), which went through multiple revisions and reprints and helped standardize guitar technique. Carulli also wrote treatises on harmony, solfège, and accompaniment. Alongside his educational output, he composed significant repertoire for two guitars, including the widely performed Duo in G, Op. 34.
Claudio Maccari and Paolo Pugliese are regarded as leading specialists in 19th-century guitar repertoire, performing both as a duo and as soloists with orchestra. Following their New York debut at Carnegie Recital Hall in 1992, they have been invited to major institutions and festivals worldwide, including the Royal Academy of Music, Yale University, and the Sydney Guitar Society, with performances spanning Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas. Their discography includes landmark recordings of 19th-century works, notably the first complete recording of Mauro Giuliani’s guitar concertos on period instruments. They also teach 19th-century guitar at the Civica Scuola di Musica “C. Abbado” in Milan.
