Franz Liszt (1811–1886) was one of the most influential virtuoso pianists and innovative composers of the Romantic era. Born in Hungary and trained in Vienna and Paris, he gained international fame for his extraordinary piano technique, inspired partly by violinist Niccolò Paganini. Later settling in Weimar, Liszt pioneered the symphonic poem, producing celebrated orchestral works such as Les Préludes and the Faust Symphony. His extensive piano music, including the Hungarian Rhapsodies and Transcendental Études, expanded technical and expressive possibilities for the instrument. Liszt also composed sacred choral and organ works, while profoundly shaping the future direction of Romantic music.
