Clarinet Colours is a recording on Channel Classics featuring clarinettist Maria du Toit with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Arjan Tien. The album highlights contemporary clarinet concertos by South African composers David Earl, Roelof Temmingh, and Conrad Asman, many of which were written for or dedicated to the soloist. Reflecting the cultural diversity often described as the “Rainbow Nation,” the program presents a vivid spectrum of expressive colour, rhythm, and contrast, showcasing the clarinet’s versatility within a modern South African musical landscape shaped by resilience, renewal, and artistic plurality.

Maria du Toit is an internationally acclaimed clarinettist and chamber musician recognized for her versatility and advocacy of South African repertoire. She has appeared as soloist with leading ensembles including the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Sofia Philharmonic, and performs regularly across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the United States. A prizewinner of competitions such as the Jeunesses Musicales International Clarinet Competition and the UNISA Competition, she has also been featured at major international events including ClarinetFest. Educated in South Africa, the United States, the Netherlands, and Bulgaria, she previously served as principal clarinet of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and teaches at the University of Stellenbosch. Her recordings, including collaborations with pianists Nina Schumann and Vera Kooper, highlight both contemporary and South African composers.
