This album was created in response to strong audience demand following performances by The Linarol Consort, who sought to preserve and share this underrepresented repertoire. It explores the musical world of Margaret of Austria (1480–1530), a key Renaissance patron and cultural figure, drawing on songs from her surviving chansonniers in the Brussels Royal Library. The title references a poignant chanson about her beloved parrot, reflecting the personal and artistic richness of her court. Featuring settings of Margaret’s own poetry, the recording offers insight into her character, enhanced by warm viol tones, expressive vocals, and imaginative instrumentation that highlights the ensemble’s versatility.

The Linarol Consort of Renaissance Viols brings together leading specialists dedicated to both consort and solo viol performance, with a distinctive focus on the instrument’s earliest repertoire and sound. The ensemble takes its name from Venetian maker Francesco Linarol, whose 16th-century viol serves as the model for their instruments. In collaboration with luthier Richard Jones, the group performs on carefully crafted replicas, forming two complementary consorts: a “high” ensemble of treble, two tenors, and bass, and a “low” ensemble pitched a fourth lower, consisting of tenor, two basses, and a great bass, enriching their tonal range.
