Diminution—the division of longer notes into faster, ornamented passages—was a central technique in 16th- and 17th-century music, documented in numerous treatises. Among the most significant is that of Christoph Bernhard, who described it as an elegant transformation of written notes through flowing embellishments. This recording pays tribute to that practice, highlighting its importance in the evolution of violin music and compositional experimentation. Drawing on foundational texts by Rognoni, Dalla Casa, Bassani, and Ortiz, as well as the improvisatory styles of composers like Giovanni Battista Fontana and Marco Uccellini, the project blends historical fidelity with creative reinterpretation, juxtaposing authentic repertoire with newly composed works inspired by the period.
Gabriele Marzella is an Italian pianist and harpsichordist specializing in Baroque and contemporary repertoire. A prizewinner in several national and international competitions, he has performed widely in Italy and abroad. He earned Master Diplomas in piano and harpsichord from the “G. Cantelli” Conservatory of Novara under Walter Bozzia and Fabio Bonizzoni. Marzella co-founded the Lux Terrae Baroque Ensemble with violinist Neyza Copa and contributed as continuo player to a 2023 recording of sonatas by Giovanni Battista Fontana. Also active as a composer, he has premiered original works and pursues interests in teaching, poetry, and the visual arts.
