The RE-CREATION project presents a contemporary reimagining of Armenian sacred and folk music by blending medieval hymns such as Havun, Havun by Grigor Narekatsi and Nor tsaghik by Nerses Shnorhali with improvisation, live electronics, and piano. Performers including Vigen Balasanyan on traditional wind instruments and pianist Kharatyan recontextualize these ancient works, while Bossa’s live electronic processing adds contemporary sonic layers that expand and transform the material. The performance also draws on folk songs collected by Komitas Vardapet, such as Tun Ari and Kanche Krunk, reinterpreting them through a dialogue between tradition and experimentation. By integrating improvisation with historical repertoire, the project creates a hybrid sound world in which sacred heritage, folk memory, and modern electronic aesthetics converge into a fluid, evolving musical experience.

Mariam Kharatyan is an Armenian-Norwegian pianist based in Norway, widely recognised for her expressive, spontaneous performance style that critics describe as both sensitive and deeply natural, often giving the impression of music being created in the moment. She holds two Master’s degrees in piano performance from the Komitas State Conservatory of Yerevan and the University of Agder, where she is currently Associate Professor in classical music and music education. Kharatyan has established an international career as a soloist and chamber musician, appearing at festivals such as Edvard Grieg Festival and collaborating with leading performers including violinist Arve Tellefsen. Her artistic work is closely tied to research into Armenian musical identity, particularly through projects on composers like Komitas Vardapet and Aram Khachaturian, blending folk traditions with classical interpretation. She has also worked with contemporary composers such as Konrad Mikal Øhrn, further expanding her interdisciplinary and cross-cultural artistic profile.
