The album brings together works unified by their unusual instrumentation—bassoon and string trio—and by the shared trajectory of their composers, who were highly celebrated in their lifetimes but later fell into obscurity before recent rediscovery. Among them is François Devienne, a distinguished multi-instrumentalist renowned particularly for his bassoon and flute performance. He was active in prominent ensembles across Paris and served as a professor at the Paris Conservatory, influencing generations of musicians. His Op. 73 bassoon quartets (1798) reflect his role in elevating wind instruments and were dedicated to François Joseph Garnier of Lyon.

Paolo Carlini is a distinguished Italian bassoonist who graduated with first-class honours from the Conservatory of Ferrara and refined his training under Marco Costantini and Klaus Thunemann. He has served as principal bassoonist with leading Italian orchestras, including those of La Scala in Milan, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, and La Fenice in Venice, and currently holds the same role with the Orchestra della Toscana. Carlini has collaborated with eminent conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Myung-Whun Chung, while maintaining an international performance career. He is also active as an educator, teaching at the Leghorn Conservatory and with the Italian Youth Orchestra.
