Canadian composer Christopher Tyler Nickel’s latest album features a deeply personal and spiritual collection of vocal and choral works that explore complex themes of peace, grief, hope, and transcendence. The repertoire spans a diverse emotional landscape, ranging from an intimate, poignant setting of the Stabat Mater—sung by soprano Catherine Redding—to a meditative De Profundis, an uplifting Magnificat, and a selection of a cappella and accompanied motets, including a new setting of O Magnum Mysterium. Under the direction of chorus master Kari Turunen and conductor Clyde Mitchell, the Vancouver Chamber Choir and the Vancouver Contemporary Orchestra deliver powerful performances that beautifully articulate these sacred, profound mysteries.

Clyde Mitchell is the Founding Music Director of the Lions Gate Sinfonia and Lions Gate Youth Orchestra on Vancouver’s North Shore. He previously enjoyed a distinguished career as a professional hornist, notably serving as Associate Principal Horn with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra under Charles Dutoit. After earning advanced conducting degrees from Southern California institutions, Mitchell served as Associate Conductor of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra for nine years. A passionate advocate for music education and contemporary composers, he maintains an active international guest-conducting schedule across North America, Europe, and Asia, alongside working as a clinician and classical music media host.
