During the 1970s and 1980s, Cuban-American pianist Horacio Gutiérrez was a celebrated favorite among London audiences and a frequent guest artist with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. His frequent collaborations with then-music director Klaus Tennstedt consistently generated immense excitement, yet their musical partnership was preserved on disc only once. This newly remastered release features two monumental works of the Romantic repertoire, brilliantly showcasing Gutiérrez’s athletic pianism. The recording serves as a definitive testament to the profound and palpable musical chemistry shared between the performers, capturing a historic and dynamic artistic synergy at its absolute peak.

Born in Havana in 1948, Horacio Gutiérrez demonstrated prodigious talent early, debuting with the Havana Symphony at age eleven. After fleeing Cuba in 1961, he trained under legendary instructors Sergei Tarnowsky, Adele Marcus, and William Masselos. Following a 1966 television appearance with Leonard Bernstein, Gutiérrez made a spectacular 1970 professional debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta. An Emmy Award winner who has recorded for EMI, Telarc, and Chandos Records, he previously served as a Distinguished Professor at the University of Houston and currently teaches at the Manhattan School of Music.
