Paul Carr’s Awakening is a striking four-movement choral piece that masterfully depicts the four seasons through the lenses of the equinoxes and solstices. Featuring a libretto by Stephen Feltham, the composition makes an immediate impression with its powerful, lyrical, and occasionally cinematographic orchestration and choral arrangements. Deeply rooted in the grand tradition of British choral music from the past century, the work offers a compelling and evocative seasonal journey. Its vibrant textures and accessible musical language showcase a profound depth that successfully honors historic national styles while providing a fresh, contemporary perspective for modern audiences.
Born in Cornwall in 1961, largely self-taught composer Paul Carr studied at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Best known for his evocative choral compositions, Carr achieved widespread national recognition after Classic FM championed his 2011 Requiem for an Angel. His extensively performed catalog includes acclaimed works like Stabat Mater, Seven Last Words from the Cross, and various instrumental concertos. Awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Nottingham Trent University in 2014, Carr receives continuous international commissions, notably from prominent British ensembles and the Dallas Chamber Choir for major works like Four New Seasons.
