This album, the latest release in Deutsche Grammophon’s archival series, presents a previously unreleased live recording from the renowned Munich Klaviersommer, featuring Martha Argerich and Nicolas Economou in a remarkable 1982 performance. At the peak of their artistic partnership, the two pianists deliver a vibrant and expressive interpretation of Mozart’s Sonata for Piano Four Hands in D major, K. 381, showcasing their exceptional musical rapport, creativity, and spontaneity. As close friends and collaborators, Argerich and Economou shared a unique artistic connection, making this recording especially significant. Given Economou’s untimely death in 1993, the album stands as a valuable and compelling addition to their limited joint discography.

Martha Argerich, born in 1941 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is widely regarded as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Known for her virtuosity, passion, and powerful interpretations, she began her studies at a young age and made her international debut at just 16. Argerich's playing is marked by its technical brilliance, emotional depth, and fiery energy. She rose to fame after winning the International Chopin Competition in 1965, and her career has since spanned decades, with performances and recordings that have made her a celebrated figure in classical music. Though she has often preferred chamber music and solo performances over large-scale concertos, her musical collaborations are equally renowned. Argerich remains an influential figure in the classical world, known for her dynamic performances and commitment to the art of piano.

Nicolas Economou (1953–1993) was a Cypriot composer, pianist, and conductor born in Nicosia. He gained international recognition at the age of 16 during the 1969 Tchaikovsky Competition. Following his studies at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, he continued his career in Europe, eventually settling in Munich after a period in Düsseldorf. From there, he built a distinguished reputation as a concert pianist while also working as a composer, arranger, conductor, and festival organizer. His multifaceted musicianship earned him widespread acclaim across Europe. Economou’s promising career was tragically cut short when he died in a car accident in Cyprus in December 1993.
