Born in 1952, French composer Philippe Manoury is a pioneer in computer-assisted composition and real-time digital signal processing. After studying at the Conservatoire de Paris, he joined IRCAM in 1980, beginning a long-standing collaboration with computer researcher Miller Puckette. This partnership yielded the groundbreaking Sonus ex machina series, which introduced real-time audio processing and the programming language Max to contemporary music. Heavily influenced by serialism and spatial effects, Manoury's extensive portfolio includes orchestral masterpieces like Sound and Fury and Abgrund. He also shaped the next generation of musicians, serving on the graduate composition faculty at UC San Diego from 2004 to 2012.
