First premiered in Dresden in 1842, Richard Wagner’s Rienzi, der letzte der Tribunen was the composer's first major operatic success. Based on Edward Bulwer-Lytton’s novel, the opera dramatizes the rise and fall of a fourteenth-century Roman reformer. Musically and structurally, the five-act work aligns closely with the Parisian grand opéra tradition, reflecting the strong influence of Meyerbeer and Spontini. However, Rienzi also foreshadows Wagner’s mature music dramas through its thematic focus on political idealism and its early use of recurring motives. Ultimately, this transitional masterpiece secured Wagner's reputation and launched his public career.

German conductor Hans Weisbach (1885–1961) trained at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik under Andreas Moser before starting his career as a vocal coach and choral director. He subsequently held successive symphonic conductorships across Germany, culminating in his directorship of the MDR Sinfonieorchester Leipzig (1933–1939) and leadership of the Vienna Municipal Orchestra. Internationally renowned as a Bach and Bruckner specialist, Weisbach famously introduced Die Kunst der Fuge to English audiences in 1930. His preserved 1935 Leipzig recording of the St. Matthew Passion stands as a definitive representation of traditional German performance practice from that era.
