Baritone Konstantin Krimmel and pianist Ammiel Bushakevitz explore their shared multicultural heritage on a new recording uniting the vocal music of Johannes Brahms and Eusebius Mandyczewski. Highlighting the close late-19th-century friendship between the famed Hamburg master and his Bukovina-born student, the album features the world-premiere recording of Mandyczewski’s eighteen Romanian Songs in their original language. Set to nature-inspired poetry by Vasile Alecsandri, these rare gems complement Brahms's Lieder through their mutual affection for Schubert, folk traditions, and poignant melancholy. Blending scholarly rediscovery with deeply personal expression, Krimmel and Bushakevitz deliver a revelatory, expressive recital bridging Eastern and Central European art song traditions.

Eusebius Mandyczewski (1857–1929) was a distinguished Romanian-Ukrainian musicologist, composer, conductor, and pedagogue who played a central role in Viennese musical life. Born into a multicultural family in Bukovina, he studied at the Vienna Conservatory under Hanslick, Nottebohm, and Fuchs, becoming a close friend and trusted confidant of Johannes Brahms. As the longtime archivist for the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde and professor at the Vienna Conservatory, Mandyczewski became an eminent scholar, pioneering landmark complete editions (Gesamtausgaben) of Schubert, Haydn, and Brahms. Also an accomplished composer, he set poetry by Eminescu, Alecsandri, and Shevchenko, blending Eastern European folk traditions with Viennese classical scholarship.

Award-winning German-Romanian baritone Konstantin Krimmel (born 1993) is one of today’s most sought-after opera and Lieder singers. After early training with the St. Georgs Chorknaben in Ulm, he completed his vocal studies under Teru Yoshihara in 2020. Krimmel's rapid rise includes recognition as a BBC New Generation Artist, Opernwelt’s 2023 "Young Singer of the Year," and "Male Singer of the Year" at the 2024 Opus Klassik Awards. An ensemble member of the Bavarian State Opera since 2021, he regularly performs at major festivals in Salzburg and Munich, and gives acclaimed Lieder recitals at prestigious venues like Wigmore Hall and the Concertgebouw Amsterdam as an exclusive Alpha Classics recording artist.
