Recorded in New York, Through the Powerful Darkness… features the Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys, led by Jeremy Filsell, in a major compilation of Kenneth Leighton’s sacred choral and organ works. The album captures three of Leighton’s Mass settings—Missa Christi, Missa Sancti Thomae, and the organ-based Missa de Gloria—alongside rarely recorded anthems including O God enfold me in the sun, Of a Rose is all my song, and A Sequence for All Saints. Blending youthful vigor with spiritual depth, these performances highlight Leighton’s signature composition style: harmonically daring, contrapuntally intricate, and deeply grounded in the traditional English choral canon.

Jeremy Filsell (b. 1964) is an internationally acclaimed virtuoso pianist, organist, and musicologist currently serving as Director of Music for the Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys. Educated as an Organ Scholar at Keble College, Oxford, and at the Royal College of Music, he earned a PhD specializing in Marcel Dupré, whose complete organ works he recorded to critical acclaim. His extensive discography of over 35 albums spans piano concertos, French art songs, and landmark organ recordings. Formerly associated with Ely Cathedral and Windsor Castle, Filsell actively tours globally, adjudicates international competitions, and remains a Steinway Artist.
