The Boston Modern Orchestra Project, under conductor Gil Rose, returns to PENTATONE alongside composer Mark Adamo for the world premiere recording of Lysistrata, or The Nude Goddess. Moving far beyond Aristophanes’ classical comedy, Adamo’s opera transforms the ancient text into a complex psychological drama, using the sex strike premise to examine the disquieting ambiguities of power, desire, and identity. Set to a mercurial, richly textured score, the production showcases BMOP’s continued advocacy for contemporary American music, following their GRAMMY-nominated 2023 release of John Corigliano’s The Lord of Cries.

Mark Adamo (b. 1962) is an acclaimed American composer, librettist, and educator renowned for expanding the modern operatic and concert repertoire. He gained international prominence with his debut opera, Little Women (1998), which became one of the most frequently performed contemporary American operas, followed by major works like Lysistrata, The Gospel of Mary Magdalene, and Becoming Santa Claus. A versatile artist who writes his own librettos, Adamo’s compositions also encompass symphonic works, choral pieces, and chamber music, such as his cello concerto Last Year. Published exclusively by G. Schirmer, he continues to mentor future stage composers through American Lyric Theatre.

Gil Rose is a visionary American conductor and curator widely celebrated for championing twentieth- and twenty-first-century repertoire. As the founder and artistic leader of the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP) and Odyssey Opera, Rose has transformed both ensembles into premier platforms for commissioning, performing, and recording overlooked and contemporary works, earning numerous ASCAP Awards, a Gramophone Special Achievement Award, and a GRAMMY. Through his independent labels, BMOP/sound and Odyssey Opera’s in-house imprint, he has produced dozens of acclaimed recordings. Active as a guest conductor, educator, and festival director, Rose also serves as Director of Opera and Sonic Exploration at Artpark.
