Initiated in early 2025 by baritone Rafael Fingerlos, what began as a recorded tribute to Vienna's musical heritage transformed into a poignant memorial following the sudden death of sound engineer and co-producer Georg Burdicek. Moving past initial grief, Fingerlos and the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Marcus Merkel, completed the project as a personal homage to their late confidant. Spanning art songs, opera, operetta, and folk music by Korngold, Strauss, Brahms, and Beethoven, the program reflects themes of transience, memory, and hope, concluding simply with traditional folk songs as an affirmation of warmth, human connection, and artistic legacy.
Austrian baritone Rafael Fingerlos, born in 1986, earned his master’s degree with honors from the Konservatorium Wien Privatuniversität under Uta Schwabe. A laureate of the Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms international competitions, Fingerlos rapidly built a distinguished career across opera, concert, and recital stages. A former member of the Wiener Staatsoper ensemble, his operatic highlights include roles at the Salzburg Festival, Semperoper Dresden, Bregenz Festival, and Teatro Real. Revered for his nuanced art song and sacred concert repertoire, Fingerlos performs internationally at major venues like the Wiener Musikverein, with a discography that includes J.S. Bach cantatas on Deutsche Harmonia Mundi.
