French classical cellist Xavier Phillips, born in 1971 to pianist parents, is a distinguished concert performer and educator. Trained at the Paris Conservatoire under Philippe Muller and mentored for seventeen years by Mstislav Rostropovich, Phillips embodies a philosophy of artistic humility, musical integrity, and generous transmission. He serves as a professor at the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne, combining his teaching with a vibrant international career as a soloist and chamber musician alongside acclaimed partners such as François-Frédéric Guy and his brother, violinist Jean-Marc Phillips-Varjabédian. Performing on a 1710 Matteo Gofriller cello, his expansive repertoire spans classical masters, rediscovered gems, and 20th-century concertos.
