Following the success of its acclaimed Delos debut, the GRAMMY Award-winning vocal ensemble Chanticleer, directed by Tim Keeler, turns its focus to 14th-century master Guillaume de Machaut. Born around 1300, Machaut built a distinguished career that culminated at the Cathedral of Reims. This album explores the dual facets of his output—a duality modern listeners might view as contrasting. It pairs his sacred masterpiece, Messe de Nostre Dame, reflecting Machaut as a devout cathedral cleric, with secular works like Douce dame jolie and Riches d’amour, which display his courtly devotion to romantic love for noble patrons.

Guillaume de Machaut (c. 1300–1377) was a premier French poet and leading Ars Nova composer, renowned as the last great figure to unite lyric poetry with musical composition seamlessly. After serving as secretary to John of Luxembourg, Machaut secured prestigious patronage from European nobility and spent his later years as canon at Reims Cathedral. A master of courtly love themes, his innovative techniques profoundly influenced contemporaries, including Geoffrey Chaucer. Machaut's legacy includes the earliest complete polyphonic Mass Ordinary setting by a single composer (Messe de Nostre Dame) alongside an extensive body of secular motets, lais, virelais, and rondeaux.
