Celebrating its centenary in October 2026, the NHK Symphony Orchestra presents a live recording of Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 under Chief Conductor Fabio Luisi, captured at Tokyo's Suntory Hall in April 2026. Serving as the culmination of their acclaimed Mahler cycle, following performances of Symphonies Nos. 3, 4, and 8, this release highlights Luisi’s synthesis of Italian lyricism and Viennese refinement. Balancing dramatic intensity with structural clarity, the performance moves from dark turbulence to triumphant brightness, featuring virtuosic horn solos in the Scherzo and rich string textures in the iconic Adagietto before culminating in a soaring, momentum-driven finale.

Fabio Luisi (born 1959) is an acclaimed Italian conductor and Grammy Award winner. He is Music Director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Principal Conductor of both the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and Tokyo’s NHK Orchestra, and Music Director of the Festival della Valle d’Itria, while serving as Emeritus Conductor of the RAI National Symphony Orchestra. His notable past roles include leadership positions at the Metropolitan Opera, Zurich Opera, the Vienna Symphony, and Dresden’s Staatskapelle. Widely in demand as a guest conductor, he has earned major honors including awards for his Nielsen symphony recordings and a Grammy for Wagner’s Ring cycle. Luisi also composes and creates perfumes.
