For his debut album on Paraty, harpsichordist Iori Hayashi presents Revelations, an intimate exploration of 18th-century French master Jacques Duphly. Featuring fourteen selections from Duphly’s four books of Pièces de Clavecin, the album highlights the composer’s expressive range, spanning dramatic character portraits, theatrical intensity, and refined ornamentation. The project reflects a profound personal connection: Hayashi’s life-changing encounter with Duphly’s music mirrors the composer’s own decisive pivot from Norman organist to Parisian harpsichordist. Recorded at Studio Sequenza on a Marc Ducornet instrument modeled after a Ruckers-Taskin, this collection transcends a typical anthology to offer a deeply felt, immersive portrait of French Baroque mastery.

Jacques Duphly (1715–1789) was a prominent French harpsichordist and composer who began his career as a cathedral organist in Évreux and Rouen. Moving to Paris in 1742 to focus exclusively on the harpsichord, he earned acclaim for his sensitive touch and distinctive characterizations. Between 1744 and 1768, he published four volumes of harpsichord music heavily influenced by Jean-Philippe Rameau, with his earlier, imaginative collections achieving notable popularity. Though his final volume showed declining innovation and awkward violin accompaniments, Duphly maintained a quiet, modest life dedicated to teaching and performance, ultimately leaving his estate to his manservant.

Japanese harpsichordist Iori Hayashi originally studied romantic piano performance at the Kyoto City University of Arts before a transformative encounter with Jacques Duphly’s Les Grâces during an optional lesson prompted him to sell his piano and commit entirely to the harpsichord. Relocating to France in 2014, he earned a Master’s degree with honors from the CNSMD de Paris in 2019. Hayashi subsequently performed Francis Poulenc’s Concert Champêtre as a soloist with the Royal Symphonic Orchestra of Morocco in 2020 and featured in a live broadcast dedicated to Duphly on France Musique in 2022.
