This first volume of Joseph Marx’s chamber music spans three decades, ranging from his 1913–14 cello works to his 1944 Violin Sonata No. 2, completed shortly before he ceased composing. The album highlights Marx’s sophisticated blend of Classical structure and Impressionistic subtle variance. Originally intended for the Suite in F major, a piece balancing rural serene lyricism with somber depth, the Pastorale shines alongside the Violin Sonata No. 2 ("Spring Sonata"). Subtitled Frühlingssonate, this concluding masterpiece ingeniously repurposes motifs from his earlier repertoire, resulting in a vibrant, dance-like work enriched by surprising harmonic turns and expressive beauty.

Austrian composer, pedagogue, and musicologist Joseph Marx (1882–1964) was a prominent post-Romantic figure whose tonal works were largely sidelined by the rise of 20th-century serialism. After earning a doctorate in Graz, Marx achieved early fame with over 120 Italianate art songs before becoming professor and rector at the Vienna Hochschule für Musik. A staunch conservative alongside contemporaries like Korngold, Marx resisted Schoenberg's atonal movement, even co-founding a rival festival in 1923. Though dismissed for decades by modernists, his rich catalog—spanning nature-inspired orchestral masterworks, refined late chamber music, and influential music journalism—has enjoyed a deserving critical revival.
