Signum Quartett's album the earth trembled recontextualizes the visionary string quartets of Leoš Janáček alongside the striking String Quartet Op. 8 by Vítězslava Kaprálová. Rooted in folk traditions and raw emotional immediacy, Janáček’s works are balanced by Kaprálová’s youthful yet assured compositional voice from the same cultural landscape. The program is thoughtfully interspersed with Janáček’s folk song arrangements and intimate miniatures dedicated to Kamila Stösslová, weaving a fragile narrative throughout the recording. Marking the ensemble's fourth release with PENTATONE following their acclaimed Schubert cycle, this album highlights the adventurous, outstanding artistry that defines Signum Quartett's approach to chamber music.

Founded in 1994 and based in Bremen, Germany, the Signum Quartett is an internationally acclaimed string quartet celebrated for its broad stylistic range and innovative programming. Playing in its current formation since 2016, the ensemble performs regularly at prestigious global venues, including Wigmore Hall, the BBC Proms, and Carnegie Hall. Their diverse discography spans classical masterworks, ECM releases of contemporary repertoire, and an award-winning Schubert trilogy on PENTATONE.
