Finnish-Dutch cellist Jonathan Roozeman presents a program highlighting contemporary Finnish cello compositions written within the last fifteen years, joined on select pieces by pianist Johannes Piirto. Anchored by a sonata from Kalevi Aho, the six-work collection demonstrates the rich diversity of modern Finnish composition. Highlights include Sauli Zinovjev’s fragmented, romantic-inspired Sustained, Cecilia Damström’s long COVID-dedicated Aveo, and Sebastian Fagerlund’s technically demanding Recitativo. Completing the program are Outi Tarkiainen’s evocative, Lapland-inspired Sanasi, kiveen uponneet and Lauri Porra’s warm, longing-infused We Lie Down Only to Get Up Again, offering a comprehensive portrait of the region's current musical landscape.

Finnish-Dutch cellist Jonathan Roozeman (b. 1997) is an internationally acclaimed virtuoso who gained early distinction at the 2012 Dutch National Cello Competition and the 2015 International Tchaikovsky Competition. Educated at the Sibelius Academy, Kronberg Academy, and Weimar, he studied under Martti Rousi, Frans Helmerson, and Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt. Known for his expansive sound spanning classical to contemporary repertoire, Roozeman regularly collaborates with premier conductors and orchestras worldwide. A prominent advocate for contemporary Finnish music, he maintains a close creative relationship with Kalevi Aho—resulting in a 2024 Double Concerto premiere—and records for BIS Records, including a scheduled 2026 album showcasing modern Finnish cello works.
