Conducted by Ian Page, the fourth installment in The Mozartists’ projected seven-volume series pairs two turbulent minor-key symphonies with dramatic operatic scenes featuring soprano Alexandra Lowe. The album juxtaposes Joseph Haydn’s celebrated Farewell Symphony with Joseph Martin Kraus’s rarely performed Symphony in C minor—a work Haydn personally predicted would be acclaimed for centuries. Complementing these orchestral masterworks, Lowe delivers fiery, expressive performances of arias from Tommaso Traetta’s Antigona and W. A. Mozart’s La finta giardiniera, alongside the powerful climactic scene from Georg Benda’s melodrama Medea, a genre innovation Mozart famously championed as the future of opera.

Founded in 1997 as Classical Opera, The Mozartists, led by founder and artistic director Ian Page, are internationally acclaimed exponents of the music of Mozart and his contemporaries. Performing on period instruments, the UK-based ensemble is celebrated for stylish interpretations of familiar masterworks alongside forgotten gems, having mounted staged Mozart operas and given UK premieres of works by Gluck, Telemann, and Jommelli. A major highlight of their work is MOZART 250, an ambitious 27-year chronological survey of Mozart's life and epoch. Their award-winning discography includes acclaimed opera recordings, solo recitals, and a featured Sturm und Drang series.
