Cipriani Potter, an influential British composer and pianist, drawn heavily to German Classical models, channeled the spirit of Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach throughout his keyboard works. Although formal lessons with Beethoven never materialized, Potter benefited from the master’s guidance and actively championed German concertos across Britain. This collection showcases Potter’s stylistic versatility, from the dramatic turbulence and inventive flourishes of the Sonata in E minor to the rigorous, Bach-inspired counterpoint of his three Toccatas. Additionally, the witty Enigma Variations pastiche highlights his warm-hearted ingenuity, while pianist Luke Jones delivers a compelling performance of the virtuosic Fantasia in G major.
Cipriani Potter (1792–1871) was a pivotal English composer, pianist, and educator who significantly elevated British musical culture by championing classical German traditions. Born into a prominent musical family, he refined his craft under Joseph Woelfl and later studied counterpoint in Vienna, earning the esteem and guidance of Beethoven. Potter introduced London audiences to major concertos by Mozart and Beethoven and advocated for full symphonic standards as a conductor for the Philharmonic Society. As Principal of the Royal Academy of Music from 1832 to 1859, he mentored generations of prominent musicians, leaving a lasting legacy through his accessible teaching and warmly inventive compositions.
Acclaimed Welsh pianist Luke Jones made his recital debut at age ten and has since performed across major concert venues in Britain, Europe, and Japan. Educated at Chetham’s School of Music, the Conservatorio di Musica in Campobasso, and the Royal Northern College of Music, Jones has appeared as a concerto soloist with premier ensembles, including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He holds the RNCM Gold Medal and has earned top honors at prestigious international competitions, including the Maria Canals, Bromsgrove, and Chopin-Roma competitions. Currently designated a Kawai Artist, Jones is recognized for his commanding technique and expressive artistry.
