This comprehensive release marks the most complete collection dedicated to Giovanni Sgambati, a neglected Italian Romantic composer who eschewed opera in favor of Germanic instrumental forms. A pupil of Franz Liszt praised by Wagner and Casella, Sgambati blazed a path for successors like Respighi by reintegrating symphonic and chamber models into Italian musical culture. Featuring the rare world-premiere recording of his five-movement Third Symphony alongside his tempestuous Piano Concerto and intricate chamber works, this super-budget set highlights Sgambati's noble, adaptable voice across diverse genres. Reissuing acclaimed modern performances led by scholar-conductor Francesco Attardi, the edition offers a richly rewarding archive for Romantic repertoire enthusiasts.
Giovanni Sgambati (1841–1914) was a prominent Italian pianist, conductor, and composer who spearheaded the revival of instrumental and symphonic music in late 19th-century Italy. A student of Franz Liszt, Sgambati championed neglected German repertoire, conducting the first Italian performances of Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony and Liszt’s Dante Symphony, as well as performing the solo part in Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto. He co-founded the Roman Society of the Quartet in 1867 and helped establish Rome’s first public music school in 1876. Sgambati’s notable compositions include a Requiem Mass, two symphonies, a piano concerto, and various chamber and piano works.
