Conducted by Flavio Emilio Scogna and performed by select young Italian musicians, this recording presents a chamber arrangement of Mahler’s First Symphony ("Titan") for just fifteen instruments. Echoing Arnold Schoenberg’s concept of thinning out orchestral sound to uncover a work's core, Scogna systematically reduces Mahler's colossal late-19th-century instrumentation. Rather than merely rearranging the piece, he chisels away excessive doublings to expose its essential contrapuntal structure while preserving its distinct, authentic timbres. The result strips away sheer volume to reveal a translucent, intimate perspective on Mahler’s monumental symphony, inviting listeners to experience its foundational essence with fresh ears.

Italian composer and conductor Flavio Emilio Scogna (b. 1956) trained in Genoa, Bologna, and Rome, serving as an assistant to Luciano Berio in the 1980s. Scogna has established a distinguished international career in both contemporary and classical repertoire, conducting prominent ensembles including the RAI Symphony Orchestra, RTVE, and the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. His compositions and operatic revisions have premiered at major global venues and international broadcasts. Honored as a Knight of the Italian Republic and recipient of the 2013 De Sica Prize for Classical Music, Scogna holds a prolific discography exceeding 50 recordings for labels such as BMG, Brilliant Classics, and Dynamic.
