Recording a composer's complete works during their lifetime reflects their immense importance and artistic influence. Following TACET’s landmark release of György Ligeti's complete piano works recorded by Erika Haase, this album shifts focus to another Hungarian contemporary master, György Kurtág. Initiated and seamlessly executed by flutist Markus Brönnimann and ensemble, the 36-track collection encompasses Kurtág's entire output for the flute. Renowned for his Webern-like mastery of the miniature, Kurtág condenses complete musical universes into just a few essential notes, a testament to his rigorous focus, where every initial tone captures the weight and depth of an entire world.

Born in Romania in 1926, Hungarian composer György Kurtág studied in Timișoara and Budapest before refining his voice in Paris under Marianne Stein, Messiaen, and Milhaud—a pivotal period that led him to designate his 1959 string quartet as Opus 1. Kurtág served as a long-time professor of chamber music at the Budapest Academy of Music from 1968 to 1993, later undertaking major international residencies in Berlin, Vienna, and Paris. Celebrated for his highly concentrated musical style, he earned the 2006 Grawemeyer Award for ...concertante..., while his 2018 opera Fin de Partie stands as his widely acclaimed magnum opus.

Swiss-born flutist Markus Brönnimann has served as the principal flute of the Luxembourg Philharmonic since 1998, following appointments with the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover and the Philharmonisches Orchester Hagen. Trained in Zurich, the US, and Karlsruhe, Brönnimann is a dedicated chamber musician and member of Zurich's Ensemble Pyramide, regularly performing at major international festivals across Europe, Asia, and Africa. Committed to expanding the flute repertoire, he actively promotes contemporary music—collaborating with composers like Peter Eötvös and Gao Ping—and champions rediscovered works. Beyond performing, Brönnimann is a prolific arranger with over 25 published chamber works, as well as an active composer.
