Espacio absoluto is a collection of nine solo cello compositions written by James Díaz and performed by his longtime collaborator, John Popham. Inspired by the concept of an infinite, unchanging universe independent of its surroundings, the album constructs vivid sonic landscapes defined by dramatic timbral contrasts, hypnotic repetitions, and multidimensional textures. Throughout the record, Díaz utilizes the cello to weave rich melodic motifs together with kaleidoscopic acoustic properties, giving tactile shape to expansive, imaginative spaces. The result is a deeply immersive listening experience that balances striking technical range with evocative emotional depth.
Acclaimed by publications like The Washington Post and The Wire for its haunting elegance and ethereal textures, the music of Colombian composer James Díaz bridges electronic techniques, amplified solos, orchestral works, and multimedia creations. His compositions build immersive, psychedelic soundscapes using vibrant acoustic masses. Díaz has earned numerous accolades, including Colombia’s 2015 National Prize of Music in Composition, the 2018 Bogotá Philharmonic Prize, and a 2022 Composition Inclusion commission. Performed by premier ensembles worldwide—such as the WDR Sinfonieorchester and Sō Percussion—his output spans major international festivals, film scores, and his landmark orchestral-electronic piece, RETRO, premiered during his residency with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Medellín.
Seattle-based cellist and chamber musician John Popham serves as Assistant Professor of Cello at the University of Washington, co-directs The Loretto Project, and is a founding member of the piano trio Longleash. Praised by The New York Times for his virtuosic, highly polished technique and warm tone, Popham integrates classical, historical, and experimental practices into his work. His recordings span major labels such as Tzadik, Carrier, and New Focus Recordings. Recognized with prestigious honors, including a Fulbright Grant and New Music USA funding, he performs internationally at leading venues and festivals, including TIME:SPANS, Donaueschinger Musiktage, and the Library of Congress.
