Johann Sebastian Bach’s four orchestral suites, originally composed for the court orchestra of Köthen and the Collegium Musicum in Leipzig, reflect the strong influence of French dance forms, which were widely popularized across German courts by visiting musicians and dance masters. Blending traditional French dance structures with inventive free movements like the Badinerie and Aria, this rich corpus has been adapted by Mireille Podeur and Orlando Bass in a new transcription for two harpsichords. Grounded in period-appropriate performance practices, their arrangement enhances Bach’s textures by incorporating authentic harpsichord ornamentation, double-form variations, and stylized repeats reminiscent of the composer’s solo keyboard works.
