Julius Eastman: Gay Guerilla presents three landmark compositions by one of late 20th-century music's most visionary voices, performed by the New European Ensemble under Emlyn Stam. Featuring Joy Boy, Buddha, and Gay Guerilla, the album showcases Eastman’s signature "organic music" framework through repetition, accumulation, and performer agency. Incorporating Jessie Montgomery’s acclaimed arrangement alongside fresh ensemble interpretations, the recording treats Eastman’s legacy not as static history, but as an active, living practice. Driven by themes of resilience, collaboration, and social engagement, this powerful collection delivers a deeply moving and thought-provoking listening experience that remains intensely relevant today.

American composer Julius Eastman (1940–1990) was an innovative pioneer who blended minimalist structures with experimental music to pioneer "organic music." Studying in New York, he was an accomplished conductor, vocalist, and performer who collaborated with key figures like Meredith Monk, Pierre Boulez, and Arthur Russell. Though his genre-bridging classical and jazz works gained initial acclaim, his open exploration of his Black and queer identity in pieces like Gay Guerrilla met industry resistance. Facing substance abuse, homelessness, and relative obscurity before his untimely death, Eastman has since achieved posthumous international prominence, with widespread modern performances, recordings, and scholarly recognition celebrating his enduring legacy.

Founded in 2009 by passionate European musicians, the Netherlands-based New European Ensemble (NEuE) is acclaimed as one of the country's leading contemporary music groups. Known for pairing innovative performances with film, theater, and visual arts, NEuE collaborates with prominent composers like Anna Thorvaldsdóttir, as well as high-profile global figures and organizations such as Edward Snowden and Amnesty International. Winner of the prestigious Kersjesprijs, the ensemble tours extensively across Europe and Asia, performing in world-class venues like Amsterdam's Concertgebouw while actively mentoring young composers and performers worldwide to create accessible, socially conscious art.
