Composer Shelley Washington makes her BMOP/sound debut with Both, a four-movement work exploring the dualities and internal multitudes that define her personal identity. By examining the inherent tensions within these contrasting elements, Washington develops unique musical textures that balance introspective reflection with a persistent sense of nostalgia. As the piece unfolds across its multi-movement structure, this contemplative tension gradually gives way to an expression of unbridled optimism. Ultimately, the release stands as a compelling study in duality, capturing a transformative journey from complex self-recollection to exuberant resolution.
Shelley Washington (b. 1991) is an American composer, multi-instrumentalist, and educator whose work is characterized by eclectic, collage-like structures. She holds a Master of Music from New York University and has taught with the New York Philharmonic Very Young Composers program while serving as Artistic Director for the Noel Pointer Foundation. Washington is a member of the Kinds of Kings Collective and the Grammy-nominated ensemble Wild Up. Her versatile compositions, which draw on her experience with saxophone, voice, and woodwinds, have been performed nationwide by leading contemporary groups, including the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, the NYU Orchestra, and Bang on a Can Fellows.
Gil Rose is a visionary American conductor and curator widely celebrated for championing twentieth- and twenty-first-century repertoire. Through his independent labels, BMOP/sound and Odyssey Opera’s in-house imprint, he has produced dozens of acclaimed recordings. Active as a guest conductor, educator, and festival director, Rose also serves as Director of Opera and Sonic Exploration at Artpark.
