Composed between 1974 and 1976, Steve Reich’s approximately 55-minute Music for 18 Musicians marks a significant evolution in his technique through expanded instrumentation, dynamic harmonic movement, and structural innovation. Written for acoustic instruments, including pianos, mallet percussion, strings, woodwinds, and voices, the piece layers two simultaneous temporal systems: a continuous rhythmic pulse played by pianos and mallets alongside human breath durations from the vocalists and winds. Framed by an eleven-chord cycle functioning like a pulsing cantus firmus, each chord expands into a distinct five-minute section. Ensemble changes are cued audibly by the metallophone, echoing traditional Balinese and West African practices.

American composer Steve Reich (b. 1936) is a seminal pioneer of minimal music whose work fundamentally reshaped 20th-century music. Characterized by repetitive figures, slow harmonic shifts, and audible structural processes, his approach was initially defined by phase-shifting techniques using tape loops, as heard in It's Gonna Rain and Come Out. Landmark compositions like Drumming and Music for 18 Musicians established minimalism as a major movement and exerted a lasting influence across experimental, rock, and electronic genres. Reich's later catalog incorporated historical and Jewish themes, exemplified by Different Trains, cementing his legacy as one of contemporary music’s most transformative figures.
