A journey through new worlds and old times: In September 1892, the composer Antonín Dvořák travelled by ship from Europe to the New World – following a call to take over the directorship of the newly founded National Conservatory in New York. Three months later, he began composing his ‘American’ symphony, which received its triumphant premiere at Carnegie Hall in New York in 1893.
Born in Tel Aviv in 1975, composer Avner Dorman is one of the world’s most recognised Israeli composers. He draws inspiration from such diverse influences as Jewish, Arabic, African and East Asian music as well as tango, salsa and Cuban jazz. His percussion concerto Frozen in Time takes the audience on a journey through time around the world in three movements; in each movement, the music presents a major prehistoric continent at a specific point in time.
The Göttingen Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Nicholas Milton (+ Sergey Mikhaylenko as soloist in “Frozen in Time”), recorded the two works on the album during the coronavirus pandemic in Göttingen’s Lokhalle and made these concerts without an audience available on YouTube – with a great response, as evidenced by the 23,000 or so hits to date!
