Australian pianist and composer Sophie Hutchings is known for her meditative, expressive style developed in solitude as a child. Though initially private about her music, her 2010 debut album Becalmed marked her public emergence. Hutchings has since released nine solo albums, earning critical acclaim and commercial success. Her 2024 ARIA Award win for A World Outside, along with two Australian Music Prize nominations and recognition as one of the top five live instrumentalists by the National Live Music Awards, cemented her reputation in contemporary classical music.

Her latest album, become the sky, is a reflective, piano-led collection recorded in single takes at the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s Sydney Harbour studios. It contrasts the expansive, layered nature of her previous work with sparse, delicate arrangements that meditate on themes of change, memory, and home. The album captures seasonal transitions and emotional introspection, blending intimate piano recordings with ambient textures, including guitar lines by longtime collaborator Ben Fletcher.

With over 200,000 album-equivalent sales, Hutchings has toured internationally and composed for films like Baby Teeth and True Spirit. She has also performed alongside artists like Ólafur Arnalds and Hauschka, establishing herself as a leading figure in modern classical music.
