Valentin Silvestrov was forced to leave his native Ukraine after the Russian invasion of 2022. His music has a prescient quality that unerringly seems to express the fate of his homeland. The intimate Violin Concerto and the heartfelt, single-span Eighth Symphony are notable for their economy of expression and emphasis on beauty, depth and harmony. This is music that hovers on the edge of silence in an uplifting homage to love and humanity, hope and renewal.
Polish violinist Janusz Wawrowski (b. 1982) has performed as a soloist in prestigious venues such as the Musikverein Wien, Wigmore Hall, and Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. A two-time Fryderyk Award winner, he records for Warner Classics, with eight acclaimed solo albums. His album Phoenix garnered multiple nominations, including ICMA and Opus Klassik 2021, and was praised by Presto Classical and Classic FM. Wawrowski is committed to premiering new violin concertos and promoting Polish music, with works dedicated to him by contemporary composers. He has received the Gloria Artis Medal for cultural merit and performs on the 1685 Stradivarius ‘Polonia’ violin.
Christopher Lyndon-Gee (b. 1954) is a globally recognized conductor and composer, celebrated for his extensive discography, primarily with Naxos since 1994. His acclaimed recordings include complete orchestral works by Markevitch and Varèse, as well as music by Silvestrov, Rochberg, Henze, and Shostakovich. His work has earned five GRAMMY nominations and major awards like the Pizzicato Prize and Sydney Critics’ Best Conductor. Also a composer, he won the Onassis Prize for his ballet Il Poeta muore and received multiple honors for his choral and orchestral works. He has collaborated with orchestras worldwide and is currently composing a violin concerto, Mémorial pour Pierre.
